Job Description

The University of Central Florida, School of Public Administration, invites applications for a tenure-earning or tenured faculty member to advance the Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning (MSURP) program and interdisciplinary research initiative on smart cities. The position is a 9-month appointment with a start date of August 2018, with potential in-person interviews to be scheduled November 2017 and no later than January-February 2018. Salary is contingent upon experience.

The MSURP program provides quality graduate training to current and prospective professionals in public, private, and non-profit urban planning organizations. The curriculum focuses on an interdisciplinary approach towards creating opportunities for students to explore current issues related to urban growth and development and planning healthy and sustainable communities.
The MSURP program is currently undergoing review for accreditation by PAB, and the School of Public Administration is seeking candidates that will contribute to making the program a center for excellence in scholarship and teaching. Potential candidates are expected to build on the program’s success in community engagement while leading the daily administrative duties and addressing current and future programmatic needs. Candidates are also expected to complement the scholarship and research activities of existing MSURP faculty and contribute to the research profile of the School of Public Administration as a whole.

The successful candidate’s scholarly work and teaching should address problems of urban and regional development from environmental, physical, economic, financial, or social perspectives. We are particularly interested in candidates whose current expertise includes and whose future scholarship, teaching, and community engagement will contribute to one or more of following fields:
• Smart and sustainable cities
• Transportation and infrastructure
• Urban design/place-making
• Land use, development and management
• Fiscal performance of cities
• Land valuation/real estate
• Active living/healthy communities
• Environmental planning/resilience
• Housing and community development

The MSURP program is housed in the School of Public Administration, College of Health and Public Affairs. The School of Public Administration offers a Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning, a NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration, Master of Nonprofit Management, and Master of Research Administration. The school also offers undergraduate minors and graduate certificate programs in Urban and Regional Planning, a B.A./B.S. in Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, and Emergency Management and Homeland Security. This combination of disciplines offers unparalleled opportunities for interdisciplinary research and community-based projects. The MSURP program boasts the strong support of the Central Florida professional planning community, and provides its faculty and students abundant opportunities to conduct research and engagement in the field.

Position Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in urban planning, urban affairs, urban policy, or a closely aligned discipline from an accredited institution by the start of the appointment period.

Candidates eligible for appointment as a tenured associate professor upon hire must have a distinguished record of scholarly achievement, research and teaching experience commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor.


Preference will be given to candidates with a terminal degree in urban planning and with experience in managing undergraduate or graduate programs in planning or closely aligned disciplines. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core courses in the MSURP program, and have a strong record and future trajectory of research and scholarly activity.
