Job Description

Undergraduate Student Services at the College of Health and Public Affairs invites applicants for a Coordinator, Academic Advising Services I position.

The coordinator is a multi-faceted position that informs, instructs, and advises targeted students in the areas of academic advising, outreach programming, career services, and provides reporting on students’ progression and essential functions.

This position provides academic advising to assigned group of sophomore and second year students following a developmental process.

Supports at risk sophomore students by providing group workshops and individual appointments.

Integrates career development concepts and strategies into the developmental advising process and help students identify academic strengths and weaknesses in the major exploration process.

Facilitates advising and registration assistance of assigned populations during Orientation sessions.

Analyzes data; generates and disseminates semester, bi-annual and annual reports.

Responsible for maintaining appropriate records and evaluation of students.

Develops and implements programs and support services for targeted sophomore and second year student populations.

Collaborates with SDES advising (first year) and College advising offices on planning and conducting transition outreach as part of the freshman-to-sophomore year transition initiatives.

Assists in developing and revising learning outcomes, measures and assessment instruments to gauge advising, programming effectiveness and targeted student’s progression.

Works with targeted students to develop a mapping and tracking plan to gauge student’s progression and ensure students are on track for their major.

Explain and/or clarify academic policies and procedures.

Makes appropriate referrals to other campus resources as necessary.

Serves on committees and participate in College, SDES and university sponsored functions such as Open House, information tables and other advising outreach initiatives.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience.

Additional Minimum Requirements

Preference will be given to applicants with a Master’s degree (in a related field) and the following:

The successful candidate should have two or more years of college-level academic advising experience.

Possess strong presentation/communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced college-wide advising office, and PeopleSoft computer programs.

Knowledge of student retention issues and strategies, and experience with the following: programs targeting second year college students, measures and assessment of student progression, and working with large programs and student populations.

Position requires occasional weekend and evening work, presenting information to large audiences, and advising students on an appointment basis Monday – Friday 8:30AM to 5:30PM.
