Job Description

The Institute for Simulation & Training (IST) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is accepting applications for a faculty administrator position within the IST program (http://www.ist.ucf.edu) who will spend the majority of their effort serving as the deputy director of the institute with responsibility for leadership and management of the research program. The remainder of effort may be spent securing and leading in other research efforts within UCF.

Central Florida is the recognized world capital for modeling, simulation, and training (MS&T), with between $4B and $5B in procurement contracts issued each year in this domain. A very significant amount of funded research supports the new training technologies and techniques for these procurements. IST has a long record of success in MS&T research and graduate education. It is the largest and most diverse program of its kind in the nation.

The Institute for Simulation & Training is home to a dynamic, interdisciplinary faculty internationally renowned for cutting-edge research in MS&T. IST emphasizes collaborative interdisciplinary research and has robust partnerships with a variety of schools, colleges, and departments at UCF, currently including Physics, Mathematics, Psychology, Computer Science, Nursing, Medicine, Philosophy, Digital Media, and History. IST also has partnerships with other universities, government agencies, and companies.

This position is a 12-month, state-funded faculty appointment within IST. The selected candidate will serve as deputy director of the institute, lead sponsored research, and may teach within the MS&T graduate program. We welcome candidates whose professional experience or research emphasizes “Modeling, Simulation & Training”. Examples include, but are not limited to, cognitive science, mathematics, human factors, computer science/computer engineering, systems engineering, etc. We are seeking a candidate who can demonstrate a significant level of research administrative experience in order to effectively assume a leadership role within a very diverse research faculty and broad research portfolio. An appointment within the professoriate (i.e., tenured associate or full professor) at a level commensurate with credentials may also be considered with appropriate coordination with the tenure granting department.

The position reports to IST’s director and supports IST faculty and others to facilitate operations and guide research endeavors related to MS&T. The incumbent must be well versed in MS&T and management of research, particularly federally sponsored research. The incumbent is expected to seek his/her own research projects, as well as advise and guide graduate students in their research and graduate theses and dissertation pursuits. As a senior manager, the deputy director plays a leadership role in strategic initiatives and relationships within IST, UCF, and the broader MS&T community. Administrative functions will entail supervision of staff, preparation of reports, personnel matters, interfacing with UCF faculty and staff, and other related matters (e.g., committee participation, invited speaker, etc.). As deputy director, the incumbent will have substantial authority in management of the institute and authority to act on the director’s behalf as needed.

Position Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a field related to MS&T.
• Highly qualified candidates with a terminal degree from an accredited institution may be appointed at an appropriate level in the professoriate (i.e., tenured associate or full professor). In order to obtain tenure, the selected candidate must have a demonstrated record of teaching, research and service commensurate with rank in a department/school related to the candidate’s area of expertise.
• The ability to demonstrate a significant level of research administrative experience in order to effectively assume a leadership role within a very diverse research faculty and broad research portfolio.
• National recognition in MS&T in high impact venues (e.g., publications, committee participation, invited speaker, etc.).


• International recognition in MS&T (e.g., committee participation, invited speaker, etc.).
• Experience in identification of emerging MS&T trends and advances that offer the potential of changing the MS&T paradigm.
• Evidence of receiving sponsored support from a diverse set of sponsors.
• Participation in the advancement of MS&T as an academic pursuit.
