Job Description

The Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC), a research institute of the University of Central Florida (UCF), is seeking a postdoctoral associate to join our Buildings Research Division. This is a 2-year appointment. The selected candidate will participate in field and laboratory research at the intersection of building science and indoor air quality. The primary research effort, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Building America Program, is to characterize indoor air quality in new homes in the southeastern U.S. and investigate the role of control measures including whole house mechanical ventilation. Partners in the effort include Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The selected candidate will participate in carrying out a detailed field data collection protocol in new, occupied homes located across the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The individual will manage participant recruitment and be involved with acquisition, calibration, and maintenance of instrumentation as well as conducting quality control and analysis of data, and reporting of results. The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to:
• Attend project meetings with U.S. Department of Energy and national laboratory staff.
• Receive training on, and have access to, FSEC instrumented building science laboratories. It is expected that the postdoctoral associate will undertake responsibility to manage certain laboratories, and support research conducted therein.
• Receive training on, and have access to, premier building energy modeling software.
• Participate in continuing education classes developed and delivered by FSEC designed to train industry professionals on building science and building energy audits.
• Receive mentoring on obtaining research funding and conducting funded research.

Position Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. from an accredited institution in building science, chemistry, mechanical/chemical/environmental/architectural engineering or a related field by the time of appointment.

Candidates must have a valid driver’s license, and be willing to regularly travel for up to a week at a time.


Prefer candidates with a strong understanding of building science as well as experience conducting energy audits, building energy simulations, and laboratory and field work involving measurement of temperature, humidity, energy use, air flow, particulate matter, and airborne volatile organic compounds. Prefer candidates with experience conducting studies subject to review by an Institutional Review Board for research with human subjects.

Special Conditions

Work hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., unless on travel.
