Job Description

The Institute for Simulation & Training (IST) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is accepting applications for a faculty position within the Modeling, Simulation & Training (MS&T) graduate program (, to begin in August 2018. This is a tenured 9-month faculty appointment to teach and conduct research. We are specifically seeking an individual who would serve as the MS&T graduate program director (initially for up to a 3-year term). While serving as graduate program director, the incumbent will have a reduced teaching load and receive a summer stipend.

About the Successful Candidate:

We seek applicants with a demonstrated record of rigorous research and scholarship, a record of external grant funding, and excellence in teaching (especially the training of graduate students) within topics relevant to MS&T. Candidates must demonstrate an interest in helping to strengthen the MS&T program and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries with faculty and students in various departments and disciplines. The successful candidate must have teaching and research experience and sufficient administrative experience to effectively assume leadership of the MS&T program. We especially encourage applicants to apply who are excited at the prospect of interdisciplinary research and teaching that integrates research or creative projects in diverse areas of inquiry. The successful candidate will have expertise that complements our existing programs and will continue to grow their own research program. We are interested in faculty whose work focuses on the intersection of humans with technical systems and social systems.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate their potential to obtain external funding to support their scholarship and to publish peer-reviewed works in high-impact research outlets. About Modeling, Simulation & Training at UCF:

Central Florida is the recognized world capital for MS&T, with between $4B and $5B in procurement contracts issued each year in this domain. A very significant amount of funded research supports new training technologies and techniques for these procurements. The Institute for Simulation & Training has a long record of success in MS&T research and graduate education. It is the largest and most diverse program of its kind in the nation. UCF is exceptionally well positioned to lead in this growing and critical profession by training educators, research professionals, and senior leadership. IST is home to a dynamic, interdisciplinary faculty internationally recognized for their cutting-edge research in MS&T. IST emphasizes collaborative interdisciplinary research, and has robust partnerships with a variety of schools, colleges, and departments at UCF, currently including Physics, Mathematics, Psychology, Computer Science, Nursing, Medicine, Philosophy, Digital Media, and History. Projects involving cross-disciplinary teams are actively pursued and encouraged within IST, across UCF, and with partners around the world.

The MS&T graduate program is currently a department of IST. Since inception, it has produced more than 350 M.S. and 100 Ph.D. graduates, with more than 100 students currently enrolled in the program. We expect the program to continue to grow and to diversify, to include additional disciplines. Efforts to establish a School of Modeling, Simulation & Training are currently underway.

IST supports the graduate program through student support and research opportunities appropriate for master’s and doctoral degrees. Additionally, many IST research faculty teach in the program, are active in its committees and in advising students, significantly augmenting the tenure-earning faculty. The MS&T curricula address both the theoretical and practical aspects of modeling, simulation, and training, and our alumni have achieved positions in academia, industry, and government. More information on the course offerings in the program can be found in the graduate catalog under Modeling and Simulation ( Teaching loads are competitive with other research-oriented universities, with the expectation that the faculty engage in graduate student mentoring and advising while also engaging in a vibrant research program.

Position Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. (or another research-focused terminal degree) from an accredited institution in Modeling and Simulation, Computer Science, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Engineering, or other field relevant to MS&T.
• A research specialization and active research program in MS&T or allied fields.
• Experience in teaching graduate courses in disciplines in, or allied with, the MS&T program.

In order to obtain tenure, the selected candidate must have a demonstrated record of teaching, research and service commensurate with rank.


Preference will be given to candidates who have:
• A strong history of publication.
• A demonstrated history of obtaining competitive external funding.
• Experience in conducting and leading interdisciplinary teaching and research in MS&T.
• Record of experience in MS&T or closely related graduate education in an organizational role.
• A demonstrated commitment to equity efforts, outreach, and/or experience in promoting equal opportunity in higher education.
