The College of Graduate Studies at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for the position of assistant or associate dean of the College of Graduate Studies ( This position offers an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic, growing unit within the university and engage in stimulating interaction with faculty and students in a manner that serves both the university and community. This position is an internal search only. This could be a part-time or full-time administrative appointment and is negotiable, with a preferred start date in May 2018.

After enrollment begins into a specific graduate program of study, the College of Graduate Studies is mandated to provide institutional oversight on business practices and the application of progressive strategies leading to degree completion. The College of Graduate Studies has structured some of this mandate under the system element of Student Success and Persistence. The purpose of this mandate is to provide the necessary infrastructures, activities, and supports that can help graduate students successfully navigate all that is required to complete a degree and become prepared for their career pathway. As well, the graduate school uses relevant data to inform our knowledge of student success and persistence leading to strategic action, interventions, and program/resource development.

Under the direct supervision of the vice president for Research and dean of the College of Graduate Studies, the responsibilities of the assistant or associate dean include:

Overseeing matters related to graduate student success and persistence;

Directing the area of Graduate Student Services and Graduation – student services, student records, and graduation processes;

Overseeing the monitoring of academic progress, advisement, graduate student appeals, and the administration of business systems that support these areas;

Analyzing graduate data so that data driven decision making can be used to further inform the various activities related to this position;

Directing and assisting in efforts to work with program directors to develop mechanisms to greatly minimize attrition and address concerns of graduate students in misconduct or probationary situations;

Development and direction of academic progress and graduate procedures and processes for nearly 200 graduate programs (degree, certificate, specialist);

Maintaining communication with deans, graduate program directors, faculty, and staff as it relates to student services, success, and persistence;

Working with the Student Conduct Board and the Office of Institutional Equity in regards to graduate student issues; and

Acting as the ex-officio member of the Graduate Council Appeals Committee.

Position Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate must be a currently employed tenured associate or full professor at UCF.

The assistant or associate dean must also possess the following:
• The ability to communicate effectively;
• Good organizational skills;
• Experience preparing reports and data analysis skills;
• The ability to lead a team; and
• Significant experience mentoring graduate students.


The candidate should have a strong background in graduate education and have held a variety of either administrative or leadership roles in the graduate education context. This could be exemplified through experience serving as a graduate program director and/or serving on college/institutional graduate committees.
